1 John 1:5-10
THREE FALSE STATEMENTS CONCERNING SIN
Sin does not separate us from God.
Sin does not exist.
We do not sin.
Verse 5: This is the message we have heard
from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at
see that God is light
and in him is no darkness
at all. Light cannot be with darkness.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO WALK IN THE DARKNESS?
Verse 6: If we say we have fellowship with
him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth
in darkness means being controlled by desires for this world instead of
desires for God.
What destroys fellowship with God—walking in darkness.
Verse 7: But if we walk in the light, as he
is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus
his Son cleanses us from all sin.
What maintains fellowship with God—walking in the light
ways of testing if you are walking in the light:
“If we walk in the light,”
1) “we have fellowship with one another,”
2) “the blood of Jesus God’s Son cleanses us from
WHAT IS THIS WALK?
Walking in the light means living each day with
God who is light
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE CLEANSED BY THE
BLOOD OF JESUS FROM ALL OUR SIN?
Having all our sins forgiven, so that God does not hold any of them against us.
Romans 5:9, Ephesians 1:7,
The cleansing is the continual process
where we feel guilty in certain areas of our life because it is an area of sin
which does not please the Lord. This guiltiness turns us away from sin. When we turn away from sin
in that area we gain freedom and power over that area.
is the process of sanctification (or becoming more like Christ)
WHAT IS THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE TWO?
“Why do you call me `Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what
I tell you?” (Luke 6:46).
The message of 1 John—that walking in the light is not
optional, but necessary for salvation—
It honors the purpose of God in Christ to destroy the
works of the devil.
There is no assurance of salvation while you are living in disobedience.
Now it is important
to point out that not I am not saying that John is teaching that you can lose
your salvation. However, I do believe
that that John is teaching us that if you can continually commit sin and live a
life in darkness that you were never really saved, no matter how many times you
went down to the altar or signed a card saying you said the sinners prayer.
John is writing
this not to make us worry about our salvation, but to give an explanation of
what has happened to those that came and looked like they were Christians, just
to go back to living a life of sin. John
is giving them assurance that if they are continually walking in the light that
they will not end up like one of the ones that went back to their old sinful
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to
cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make
him a liar, and his word is not in us.
The sentence, I am without sin, amounts to the sentence, God is a liar.
When you say you are a Christian you are not saying you never
sin, you are saying you are aware of your sin and trying to keep from sinning.
WHAT DOES SANCTIFICATION MEAN?
WHAT DOES JUSTIFICATION MEAN?
before God when we accept Christ as our Lord, Savior, and Treasure, but we will
be continually sanctified
and made more like Christ until we receive our heavenly bodies.
